The HIT program at SCTCC allows students to combine healthcare and information technology into a career with tremendous potential. Health information is rapidly moving from paper records to electronic records. The HIT program at SCTCC will help students build the organizational and technical skills they will need to succeed in this fast‑paced career.

The use of health information is an integral connection between doctors, patients, insurance providers, and other healthcare professionals within the healthcare field. The professionals who work in this field will use cutting-edge technology and are considered experts in the field of patient health information and medical records. They insure the quality of health information by coding diagnoses and procedures for reimbursement and research, compiling and maintain registries, verifying health record completeness, accuracy, and proper entry into electronic health systems, utilizing multiple computer applications to assemble and analyze patient data and assuring patient privacy and data security.

Individuals who make health information their chosen career find themselves networking with professionals at all levels in healthcare facilities. The labor projections for employment within this field indicate expected growth faster than average over the next several years due to continuing demands for quality healthcare services .  Students become members in American Health Information Management Association, a nationally recognized organization, and hold memberships in our state organization. As a Health Information professional, students become experts on patient information as they maintain, collect, and analyze health information while fulfilling a vital role in adding to quality health care.
