If I apply to the college and get accepted, am I automatically accepted into the Paramedicine program?
No, you are accepted to the college first and must complete pre-requisites (or show proper advancement in pre-reqs). In addition you must have a:
- Valid MN EMT-B card
- American Heart Association (AHA) CPR for Healthcare Provider Card
How many students are admitted into the Paramedicine program each year?
- 18 into the 3 semester day time program
- 18 into the 5 semester evening program
Are there summer classes?
- Yes, both programs have clinical classes during the summer.
- Day-Program clinicals equal roughly 32-44 hours per week in the summer
- Evening –Program clinical equal roughly 20-32 hours per week in the summer
- In addition students wishing to be admitted to the major may take preparatory or general education courses to further expedite their coursework
What can I do while I am waiting to get into the program?
You can work on finishing all general education courses for the program or even work on an Associate of Arts degree through SCTCC.
If I don’t get into the Paramedicine, what other SCTCC health programs should I consider?
You should consider any of the other health programs at SCTCC. All SCTCC health programs have science and general education requirements.
Who regulates the curriculum for the Paramedicine program?
The curriculum is regulated by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Program. The process is administered by the Commission on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). The SCTCC Paramedicine faculty performs a curriculum review at the end of each academic semester. Curriculum changes must be approved by the SCTCC AASC committee.
Who reviews the quality and content for the program?
The paramedicine program curriculum, passing rates on the National Registry Paramedic Exam and graduate placement/ employment are reviewed by the Paramedicine faculty, the SCTCC Paramedicine Program Advisory Committee and by CoAEMSP.
Who will I get for an advisor as I work on my Paramedicine prerequisites?
You will be assigned a Paramedicine program faculty as your academic advisor.
Do I have classes every day?
- The day program meets Monday thru Friday during the day time for the fall semester. Classes then meet Tuesday and Thursday evening and are interspersed with clinicals.
- The evening program meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 6p-930p and on select Saturdays from 830a-230p for two semesters. In the second fall semester it meets on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5p-9p with approximately one 12 hour clinical per week.
Can I have job during the program?
During the day time program it will be difficult to have job that is greater than 10-15 hours per week. Also scheduling will be most likely be difficult with both a job and the clinical schedule.
The evening program is designed so that it is possible to have a job. A student should however plan on taking vacation and having a flexible schedule during clinical semesters. The faculty will try to accommodate student needs but cannot guarantee those needs will be met.
How much does the program cost?
Tuitions varies from year to year. Credits will vary depending on track. A student should budget approximately $3500 for supplies. These supplies include a tablet laptop, two boxes (at minimum) of gloves, eye protection, an OSHA approved reflective vest, two uniform shirts, one pair of uniform pants, access to the clinical scheduler and documentation site-FISDAP, the textbook/e-textbook, and other associated texts, and other accessories that a student chooses to buy. This cost does not include the national registry exam which is offered through South Central Technical College, that cost is approximately $500 not including transportation expenses.
Where are your clinical sites?
We have a number of clinical sites. The majority are in the St. Cloud area however we do have selected sites in the Twin Cities metro area as well as other locations in central Minnesota.
Do I get paid for clinicals?
Clinical hours are learning hours thus a student cannot be in a position to make money while they are in the clinical setting.
What other documentation do I need?
- SCTCC will do a background on every student prior to starting any clinicals.
- A physical that is signed by a MD, PA, or NP and completed by both the student and MD.
- Proof of Immunizations for Hepatitis B, Chicken Pox, Mumps, Measles, Rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, and tuberculosis
The laptop:
This program requires students to purchase a laptop computer. The faculty updates the parameters of the computer each year. The tablet must be a tablet laptop or be able to be converted to capture signatures. It should have the following capabilities in addition to being a tablet: wireless internet, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint. Please check with program faculty prior to purchasing a laptop computer for this program.
