Legal Administrative Assistant AAS


1 - Examine and discuss the concepts and principles that form the foundation of U.S. federal and state law
2 - Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the U.S. court system
3 - Examine and prepare documents used in the various courts
4 - Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of litigation, family, real estate, estate planning, probate, civil, corporate, criminal, bankruptcy law and legal research appropriate to a legal administrative assistant
5 - Apply formatting and punctuation rules for preparing court papers and legal documents
6 - Demonstrate working knowledge and usage of correct spelling of legal and medical terminology
7 - Demonstrate understanding and application of general office skills such as accounting, filing, business math
8 - Transcribe and format legal documents from dictation with correct spelling, grammar, and legal document formatting in a timely manner
9 - Demonstrate mastery of the following Microsoft software application programs: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access
10 - Show comprehensive oral and written communication skills including business writing, analytical writing and oral presentations
11 - Demonstrate a typing speed over 60 wpm
12 - Explain the concepts of professionalism, confidentiality, attorney-client privilege and the Code of Professional Responsibility
13 - Examine and discuss the importance of ethical and moral decisions and the implications and consequences of using ethical behavior


Paralegal AS


1 - Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the U.S. court system.
2 - Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of litigation, family, real estate, estate planning, probate, civil, corporate, and criminal law and legal resources appropriate to a paralegal.
3 - Examine and prepare documents used in the various courts.
4 - Perform legal research.
5 - Describe the nature and scope of the occupational opportunities I the paralegal field.
6 - Articulate the relationship between their chosen occupation and their general education coursework.
7 - Perform specific legal procedures in specific areas of law.
8 - Make ethical decisions about carrying out specific legal procedures.
9 - Use appropriate written, oral, and interpersonal skills in legal and business setting.
10 - Use critical and creative thinking to analyze, synthesize and evaluate information.
