TRiO Awareness Week at SCTCC

Posted: Mon, 02/24/2014 - 11:05am in News

St. Cloud Technical & Community College is celebrating its 17th year of hosting TRiO Awareness Week for its TRiO Student Support Services.

The Federal TRiO Programs (TRiO) are designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Specifically, TRiO serves and assists low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs.

Currently, TRiO Student Support Services at St. Cloud Technical & Community College serves more than 160 students each year. Services include intensive advising on academic and career goals, academic progress, financial aid, leadership, mentoring, and college transfer. Students also receive access to study resources, tutoring, events, and college success workshops. A student must be eligible to receive services and be accepted into the federally funded program.

The focused, proactive attention provided to students in TRiO yields strong academic performance. Students in TRiO demonstrate stronger academic persistence and completion rates than the general student body. Further, they post a higher grade point average.

TRiO History

TRiOThe history of TRiO is progressive. It began with Upward Bound, which emerged out of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 in response to President Lyndon Johnson 's War on Poverty. In 1965, Talent Search, the second outreach program, was created as part of the Higher Education Act. In 1968, Student Support Services, which was originally known as Special Services for Disadvantaged Students, was authorized by the Higher Education Amendments and became the third in a series of educational opportunity programs. By the late 1960's, the term "TRIO" was coined to describe these three federal programs.
