Collegiate DECA Students Place in Top Ten at International Conference

April 19, 2019

St. Cloud Technical & Community College Collegiate DECA members traveled to the International Career Development Conference April 13-16, and two students, Matt Evans and Charlie Rentz, placed in the top 10 in Professional Sales.

Four SCTCC students qualified at the state conference in February to be able to attend the ICDC this year, held in Orlando: Matt Evans of St. Augusta, Shantell Gnahn of Pelican Rapids, Hailey Koenig of Staples and Charlie Rentz of Buffalo.

Evans and Rentz competed as individuals in the Professional Sales category and were prepared with a product and sales plan for the competition. After the first round, they both qualified to advance to the second round of competition, where they each placed in the top 10 in the nation. The results from this competition are simply a top 10 designation.

The competitive events program includes both two- and four-year colleges from across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Students put experience, skills and knowledge to the test in one of 25 different competitions, which help prepare students for their professional career and are judged by business and industry professionals.

Advisor and Sales Management Marketing instructor Becky Shand attended the conference with the SCTCC and St. Cloud State University Collegiate DECA students.

“I’m so honored to accompany these students to ICDC and proud of each of their accomplishments. The fact that they compete against two- and four-year universities across the nation is a credit to their talents and skills,” said Shand. “We are very proud that Charlie and Matt came away with a top 10 win in Professional Sales. This just confirms that Collegiate DECA at SCTCC is preparing students for the real world!”

DECA has more than 200,000 members and prepares high school and college students for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.
