Two Baseball Cyclones named All-Americans; One a Two-Time

Baseball All American
June 13, 2019

Two Cyclones Baseball players were named to the NJCAA DIII All-American teams.

Will Funk, a freshman from Sauk Centre, was named to the first team, and Luis Massa Ortiz, a sophomore from San Lorenzo, PR, was named to the second team. This is Massa Ortiz’s second All-American, only the third time a Cyclone has achieved that accomplishment.

Funk proved to be a jack of all trades for the Cyclones this spring playing defensively in the outfield as well as 2nd base and 3rd base.  Funk, who was named Region 13 player of the year, led the dynamic Cyclones offense as well.  He led the team in batting average (.457), home runs (7), and hits (58).  He stole 22 bases and scored 50 runs while driving in 44 of his own.

Massa Ortiz picked up where he left off during the 2018 campaign providing the punch in the middle of the lineup. 29 of his 56 hits were extra bases (20 doubles,2 triples, and 7 home runs).  Luis drove in 60 runs during the 2019 campaign while scoring 51 times himself.  Massa Ortiz slugged .802 for the season which was good enough for 6th in the country.

Congratulations, Will and Luis!
