Cyclones start the season 5-1

The Cyclones started strong their first week of competition finishing 5-1.

Wednesday the Cyclones traveled to Grand Rapids, MN for a triad and faced Gogebic Community College (D2) conquering 3-0.  Stat leaders included Kalie Jergens, sophomore outside hitter from Becker, with 11 kills and 16 digs, Kalli Mathiasen, sophomore setter from Apollo, led the offense with 29 set assists. Chelsea Schroeder, sophomore libero from ROCORI, earned 3 service aces.

The Cyclones then faced Itasca Community College and took that match 3-1.  Jergens led in kills with 19, hitting a .471 hitting percentage.  Schroeder led in digs with 15 while Mathiasen earned 44 set assists and 4 service aces. First year middle hitter from Big Lake, Anastasia Larson, earned 5 blocks at the net.

Hosting the annual John Haller Tournament Friday and Saturday, the Cyclones first faced Mesabi Range Community College, defeating them 3-0.  Jergens led with 11 kills hitting a .529%.  Schroeder led the defense with 10 digs while Mathiasen earned 30 set assists.  Rachel Owens, first year middle hitter from St Francis, had 3 solo blocks. 

The second match of the day the Cyclones won 3-1 over Dakota County (D2).  Jergens and Kyra Harvey, sophomore outside hitter from Sauk Rapids, both had 16 kills while Mathiasen earned 46 set assists.  Schroeder led the defense with 17 digs and Larson produced 3 blocks.

On Saturday the Cyclones started the morning against Dakota Bottineau (D2) and earned another win, 3-1.  Jergens and McKayla Quade, sophomore middle hitter from Paynesville, both had 10 kills. Mathiasen and Schroeder both led in digs with 7 each. 

The final match was against Marshalltown Community College (D1) and the Cyclones fell 3-0.  Jergens led with 10 kills while Mathiasen earned 19 set assists.  Jergens and Schroeder each earned 9 digs. 

After a great first week of the season, the Cyclones travel to Central Lake College in Brainerd, MN on Friday, September 1st to take on the Raiders and the Wildcats from North Dakota State College of Science.  The Cyclones next home match is Wednesday, Sept 13th versus Ridgewater at 6:30pm.
