TRIO hosted its annual First-Generation College Student Celebration on Thursday to celebrate students who are the first in their immediate families to go to college. The celebration was in honor of First-Generation College Celebration Day, which is celebrated nationally on Nov. 8.
Since 2017, the Council for Opportunity in Education and the Center for First-Generation Student Success have encouraged colleges and universities to recognize the day by getting creative in how they celebrate and support first-generation students.
SCTCC's celebration included keynote speaker Jan Stanley, a panel of students and staff, and lunch.
In 2017, 67 percent of SCTCC graduates were first-generation college students.
“As a college and certainly within TRIO, first-generation students are a big part of our identity,” said TRIO Director, William Tuoy-Giel.
